The 15-year-old Jacobo Villasclaras Bartolomé has made history in Nerja. He won the 18th Local Chess Tournament and became the second-youngest champion in the competition’s history.
The adolescent, representing the Balcón de Europa Chess Club, was the winner of a tournament with 12 players. It was a round-robin format, followed by playoff matches to determine the final rankings.
Jacobo secured third place in the initial league phase, but then showed his impressive skills and also his composure in the playoffs. He first defeated Eugenio García Santos, the second-place finisher in the league round. Then, he overcame Willem Broekman, the top seed and a multi-time tournament champion, to clinch the big title.
Jacobo is now the second-youngest winner in the tournament’s history. He follows Darío Arce González, who claimed the title in 2021 when he was just 13 years old. Jacobo is now nearing 2000 ELO points, and both his club and coach expect even greater achievements in the near future.
