Gómez, Weverton and Palmeiras make history in 🇦🇷, see reactions to the win

This Wednesday (17), Palmeiras defeated River Plate 2-1 at the Monumental de Núñez, in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Conmebol Libertadores.

And it’s no exaggeration to say that history was made tonight in Buenos Aires.

Starting with Gustavo Gómez, who opened the scoring with a header, becoming the top “defender-scorer” in the history of the Libertadores with 14 goals.

Among the “foreigners” with the most goals for Brazilian teams in the Libertadores, the Paraguayan defender is only behind forwards Germán Cano and Paolo Guerrero.

And, with Vitor Roque’s goal at the end of the first half, making it 2-0 on the scoreboard at Monumental de Núñez, Verdão joined Boca Juniors and Fluminense as the only teams to beat River Plate by more than two goals, in the first half, at home, in the Libertadores.

Finally, Weverton reached 64 victories in the Libertadores, in 99 games, becoming the player with the most wins in the history of the continental tournament.

55 of these 64 victories were with Palmeiras, where he won the Libertadores twice.

Previously, Weverton was tied with goalkeeper Fábio, from Fluminense.

Social media, of course, reacted to Verdão’s “textbook” first half and, in general, to the great victory in Argentina.

Even the “tense” moment, when the referee announced the VAR decision for a possible penalty by Weverton, but nullifying the play for offside, was recorded on the web.
