Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell ranks 21st in USA TODAY’s updated college football head coach salary database.
Fickell’s salary is listed at $7,825,000 annually with the potential for another $1,450,000 in bonuses. His buyout, which is a hot topic as the Badgers are 2-3 through five games, is listed at $27,493,333. Fickell still has four years left on the original terms of the seven-year contract he agreed to in November of 2022, a term that does not include the program’s procedural one-year rollover extensions.
Fickell is the seventh-highest-paid Big Ten coach this season, behind Ohio State‘s Ryan Day ($12,575,000), Oregon‘s Dan Lanning ($10,400,000), Nebraska‘s Matt Rhule ($8,500,000), Penn State‘s James Franklin ($8,500,000), Indiana’s Curt Cignetti ($8,300,000) and Illinois’ Bret Bielema ($8,200,000).
Entering their Week 7 game against Iowa, the Badgers have had consecutive losses to Alabama, Maryland and Michigan, which leave Fickell with a 14-16 record at Wisconsin. The coach is somewhat held in place by the prohibitive buyout figure. But if the program continues to trend negatively, a change may not be out of the question.
