After spending his underclassman years at Folsom, running back Jaylan Barcenas transferred to Casa Roble for his senior year – and the rest has been history.
The speedster has been a revelation for the Rams, who are off to a 6-1 (3-0) start, and his tremendous individual production tells you everything you need to know.
In just six games of action, Barcenas has run for 559 yards and seven touchdowns on 8.0 yards per carry, and he’s particularly shined as an explosive receiving threat with 196 yards and five touchdowns on just nine receptions. That comes out to a total of 755 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games, good for 125.8 yards of offense and two touchdowns per game despite the fact that he only had two carries in Week Seven, a 57-6 annihilation of Natomas. Through his first five games as a Ram, Barcenas was averaging 143.8 yards per game. And his team has scored at least 32 points in every game.
Barcenas’ best game so far occurred in Week Six, a 32-13 Golden Empire League victory over Rio Linda. He ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and had a 38-yard touchdown catch, helping the Rams essentially cruise to victory.
For his 223-yard, three-touchdown performance, Barcenas has been voted SN’s NorCal Player of the Week for Week Six with 5,440 votes, which constituted 40.29% of the total votes cast.
He faced steep competition from three other players who received a substantial number of votes. St. Bernard’s WR/LB/K Tyler Hinrichs came in second with 4,177 for his unique all-purpose stat line to beat Eureka, Balboa RB/LB Mekai Smith earned 3,289 votes, and Lincoln (San Francisco) DE Marvel Silaen rounded out the voting with 465 votes.
In Week Eight, Barcenas and Casa Roble look to stay hot at Dixon. Their regular season finale, an Oct. 31 battle at Sutter, will likely constitute a winner-take-all showdown for the Golden Empire League title.
