You can never have too much speed.
Hockey is played at a fast pace. Furthermore, since Todd McLellan took over the Detroit Red Wings, the team has been playing better and faster.
Part of playing faster is breaking the puck out of the zone cleanly. Another part is passing the puck to get out of danger. You can pass a puck faster than you can carry a puck.
However, the Red Wings have a prospect ready to test that theory.
Dmitri Buchelnikov is having himself a year in the KHL. The 21-year-old Russian has been producing at a fantastic rate, with 41 points in 50 games.
The KHL took a break from league play this past weekend to host their All-Star Game weekend. This is where things got interesting for Buchelnikov.
The Red Wings prospect participated in the fastest skater competition. The results were impressive.

Buchelnikov won the event with a time of 13.737 seconds.
This is great news, both for the player and the organization. Having speed on your team is a huge asset. Having that player be more than capable of putting the puck in the back of the net is advantageous.
Because Buchelnikov is playing in Russia, the Red Wings don’t need to make a decision about signing him. However, his KHL contract runs until next summer. Unless he and his team (Vityaz) mutually agree to terminate the contract before then, that would be the earliest Red Wings fans could see this speedster in North America.
By that time, he might be even faster.
