Denmark has firmly dismissed the U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed suggestion of taking over Greenland.
The Defence Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, made it clear that the island’s future will be decided by its own people.
Greenland’s future remains uncertain
“That won’t happen,” Poulsen told Danish broadcaster DR, emphasizing that Greenlanders alone have the right to determine their path. He acknowledged that Trump, despite his remarks, also recognized Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed Poulsen’s words, saying that the most important takeaway from Trump’s comments was his acknowledgment of Greenland’s autonomy. He noted that while Greenland has expressed a desire to loosen ties with Denmark, it remains uncertain whether it would seek closer ties with the U.S. instead.
Martin Lidegaard, about Trump’s comments: “Completely disrespectful”
The remarks come as Greenland prepares for elections next week, with growing discussions over its political future. While some Danish officials took a diplomatic tone, others were more critical. Martin Lidegaard, leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party, called Trump’s comments “completely disrespectful,” though he admitted they were “less bombastic” than his previous statements on the matter.
Trump’s interest in Greenland went back to 2019, when he advanced the idea of purchasing the autonomous territory. Denmark rejected this proposal. Now, with discussions resurfacing, Danish leaders remain firm: Greenland’s fate lies in the hands of its people.
