This summer, 2025, passengers flying long-haul with Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines can enjoy free messaging throughout their journey.
Lufthansa’s recent press release explained that this new initiative will allow travellers to send and receive unlimited messages. This includes photos, using their smartphones or tablets via popular apps like WhatsApp and iMessage.
This offering, available across all travel classes, is part of the Lufthansa Group’s broader strategy to improve the overall travel experience. “The introduction of free messaging on long-haul flights is another important step in continuously improving our customers’ overall travel experience,” said Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group.
Free messaging services were first introduced on Lufthansa’s short and medium-haul flights in 2024 and were quickly embraced by passengers. Heiko Reitz, Chief Customer Officer at Lufthansa Airlines, remarked, “What is already a great success on short and medium-haul flights will also be very popular with our guests on long-haul flights. Being reachable even during a long flight has long been a basic need and a decisive factor when choosing an airline.”
Staying connected while in the sky
This move is part of a growing trend in aviation, with airlines recognising the importance of connectivity as a key feature for travellers. By enhancing digital services such as free messaging and in-flight internet, the Lufthansa Group is positioning itself as a leader in passenger experience.
Expats and frequent travellers will benefit significantly from this development, particularly on routes to the USA, Brazil, and Japan. Staying connected with family, friends, or even colleagues during extended flights will make journeys more convenient and enjoyable.
In other news, Lufthansa is planning to hire thousands of new people this year.
