Age in Spain, the national nonprofit supporting older English speakers, has launched a €3,500 fundraising campaign to sustain its Friendline telephone companionship service.
Described as a “lifeline” and “safe space,” Friendline offers free weekly calls that connect trained volunteers with older expatriates, providing vital emotional support and companionship. Mavis, a long-time user, shares, “It’s like having an old friend now,” after finding help with residency paperwork.
Rob, an expat since 2014, refers to the chats as “brain food,” which helps ease physical and mental struggles. Marilyn, who lives remotely and runs an animal foster home, says Friendline helps combat loneliness, offering motivation and a “boost” that is often absent from her local community. She emphasises the need for long-term expat support: “When you’re older, you struggle; a link is vital.”
Age in Spain’s initiative ensures conversation and care for those who are isolated, regardless of their time in Spain or level of Spanish fluency. With €3,500, Friendline can continue fostering connections. Mavis notes, “You’ll need help at some stage.”
