A gas explosion at a closed bar in Lo Pagán, part of San Pedro del Pinatar, has left at least 15 people injured, including three in very serious condition.
Explosion causes major damage during weekly Market
The incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, at Casa Javi, a bar located on Calle Torres Fontes. Although the bar was closed at the time, the explosion caused heavy damage to the building and nearby market stalls. The weekly street market was taking place right next to the bar when the explosion occurred, which may have led to more injuries.
Emergency services received more than 25 calls from the public as the blast shook the area. Firefighters quickly responded and managed to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, they confirmed that the building did not suffer structural damage.
Three people in critical condition
According to emergency services, three people were seriously injured. Two of them, who suffered severe burns, were taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia and are now being treated in the intensive care unit. A third person in critical condition was taken to Los Arcos del Mar Menor Hospital.
Three others with moderate injuries were also taken to hospitals in San Javier and Cartagena. In total, nine more people received medical attention, with some treated at Los Arcos, the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, and the San Pedro del Pinatar health centre.

Bar had previous fire incident last year
This is not the first incident at Casa Javi. Nearly a year ago, the same bar caught fire, which also affected the apartment located above it. Firefighters had to act quickly back then to put out the flames and minimise damage.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the gas explosion.
Update
Investigation Underway as Butane Cylinder with Cut Hose Found
Authorities now confirm that 17 people were injured in the explosion, including two women with severe burns who remain in intensive care. The latest reports suggest a gas leak may have triggered the blast, and investigators found a butane gas cylinder inside the bar with a cut hose, raising the possibility that the explosion could have been intentional. While the bar was empty at the time, as it only opens at night, most of the injured were shoppers and workers at the nearby weekly market. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with fruit and debris flying through the air and people suffering cuts from shattered glass. Emergency services and even local residents assisted the wounded at the scene. Local officials have since launched a full investigation, and the Town Hall plans to support affected individuals with a dedicated help point and legal action if necessary.
