Planning a sunny getaway in Spain? Always check the weather first. In this article we will look at the top 3 apps for accurate real-time weather forecasts in Spain. Just in time for Storm Martinho and the, hopefully, better weather yet to come in 2025.
As heavy rain, strong winds and coastal waves thrash Spain this week, millions are turning to their phones, hoping their weather app can tell them when the skies will clear. But which app actually gives you the right forecast in Spain?
What we tested
We reviewed three of the most popular apps:
- AEMET (Spain’s official Met Office app)
- The Weather Channel
- BBC Weather
We compared forecast accuracy, ease of use, and real-time reliability – especially for short-term predictions like hourly rain forecasts, weekend planning, and travel updates.
A recent study by the University of Reading looked at UK-based apps, but we put them to the test here in Spain.
How we tested the apps
We checked hourly and daily forecasts in five locations across Spain (Madrid, Malaga, Valencia, Bilbao and Tenerife) over a two-day period, from March 21 to March 22. We compared the forecast data to actual weather conditions reported by AEMET and local news, tracking temperature, rainfall and wind accuracy. We also scored the apps on ease of use, loading speed, and live update reliability.
The verdict: most reliable weather apps for Spain
1) AEMET – Best for Spain: 95% forecast accuracy (rainfall and temperature)
Spain’s official meteorological agency, AEMET, naturally had the edge when it came to local accuracy. If you’re planning a hike, road trip or even just hanging washing outside, this app gives you hyperlocal, reliable updates.
2) The Weather Channel – Best overall: 95% accuracy.
Accurate throughout the day, globally reliable, and packed with real-time data and satellite info. Its intuitive interface and personalised alerts make it the best app for daily and weekend planning.
3) BBC Weather – Least accurate: 90% accuracy.
A household name. Despite being reasonably good, and a go-to for many Brits, this app offered the weakest forecast accuracy in the study, likely due to sourcing delays or less emphasis on Spanish microclimates.
Final verdict: Best apps for weekend weather planning in Spain?
If you want to plan a sun-filled getaway, and avoid soggy socks and last-minute plan changes, the AEMET and the Weather Channel apps are your safest best. AEMET is slightly more accurate and detailed for Spain, but the Weather Channel apps is slightly more user-freiendly overall. They are both solid choices, as they combine: Real-time weather data, advanced forecast models, easy-to-use design.
Whether you’re heading out for a hike or booking a beach day, both apps are your pocket-sized Spanish weather experts.
