Camping is no longer a one-size-fits-all experience. As the 2025 Camping & Outdoor Hospitality Report by Kampgrounds of America (KOA) shows, different generations are bringing new wants and needs to the outdoor travel scene.
From tech-savvy Millennials to nature-loving Boomers, each age group is redefining how they camp.
Gen Z: Glampers
According to KOA, “Gen Z and Millennial campers make up 61 per cent of all new campers,” with Gen Z showing a clear preference for comfort and convenience. 44 per cent of Gen Z campers said they were likely to stay at a glamping resort, and 25 per cent would rent gear from a campground, compared to just 6 per cent of Boomers.
Millennials: Tech-driven destinations
Millennials are one of the most connected generations, with KOA reporting that 71 per cent of Millennials use AI or online tools to plan their trips. They are also leading the pet-friendly trend – 61 per cent of Millennial campers bring their dogs.
KOA notes that Millennials are “most likely to combine work and leisure travel,” with many using WiFi access at campgrounds to extend their stays.
Gen X: Classic family campers
Gen X campers still lean into traditional camping styles. 54 per cent choose tents, and 52 per cent say their top motivator is “spending time together with loved ones.” KOA’s data reveals that 55 per cent of Gen Xers enjoy slowing down and simply being in the moment, reflecting a more relaxed, nostalgic approach to the outdoors.
Boomers: Accessibility is key
KOA reports: “As our older camper generations mature, it is imperative that campgrounds continue to create opportunities for them to enjoy the outdoors.” 47 per cent of Boomers choose sites with easy walking paths, and 68 per cent say beach walking improves their well-being.
With over one million new households expected to camp in 2025, the outdoors is your oyster.
