
Cartagena’s highly anticipated Carnival Grand Parade finally hit the streets on Sunday, March 9, after being postponed for a week due to heavy rain. Despite the earlier setback, the sun came out, and carnival-goers made the most of the celebrations, dressing in stunning costumes, dancing, and enjoying the fantastic atmosphere along the parade route.
Mayor praises performers and their stunning costumes
Mayor Noelia Arroyo led the parade in Alameda de San Antón, ensuring everything was ready for the big event. She praised the dedication of the performers and highlighted their incredible costumes. The crowd cheered as dancers in glittery outfits, children’s groups, and even seniors took part in the fun. The Carnival Kings and Queens led the way, filling the parade with color and excitement.
Celebrations end with traditional burning of Don Carnal
The parade concluded with the traditional burning of Don Carnal (Sir Carnival), a symbolic event marking the end of the festivities. A spectacular fireworks display followed, lighting up the night sky and bringing the celebrations to a memorable close.
San Pedro del Pinatar’s Parade also goes ahead
Over in San Pedro del Pinatar, the carnival parade took place as planned after also being postponed due to heavy rain and flooding. The event brought the same festive spirit to the streets, with locals and visitors enjoying the lively music, dancing, and colourful costumes.
Santiago de la Ribera Parade still on hold
Unfortunately, the Santiago de la Ribera parade faced another setback due to strong winds. Organizers were forced to postpone the event once again, leaving the community eagerly waiting for a new date to celebrate.
Despite the weather challenges, the spirit of Carnival remained strong, with Cartagena and San Pedro del Pinatar successfully bringing the magic of the festival back to the streets.
