Planning a holiday can be tricky when you’re juggling dates, destinations, and daily expenses.
If you’re aiming to keep costs down, new data from Hellosafe might help you decide where to go next year. Their research covers 136 countries worldwide, focusing on 40 European nations to see how much you’ll need each day for accommodation, food, and local transport (flights not included).
Eastern Europe leads the way: Moldavia tops the list
According to the Hellosafe report, some of the cheapest spots in Europe are in the east. Moldavia comes out as the most affordable at 32 euros per day, closely followed by Serbia (37 euros), Kosovo (42 euros), and Poland (52 euros). These figures reflect the average daily budget needed to cover the essentials, making them attractive choices for travellers who want to stretch their money further.
In the middle of the pack—around 100 to 115 euros per day—you’ll find destinations like Malta (102 euros) and Slovakia (112 euros). Surprisingly, Sweden (113 euros) also sits in this bracket, showing that not all Nordic countries come with sky-high prices. Other nations, including Spain, Germany, and Austria, hover around 130 euros a day, demonstrating a broad mix of affordability across the continent.
Switzerland: Europe’s priciest travel destination
At the other end of the scale, it’s no shock that Switzerland emerges as Europe’s priciest destination, with an eye-watering 227 euros per day. Not far behind are France (170 euros) and Iceland (166 euros), rounding out the top three most expensive European destinations. In fact, Switzerland is ranked the sixth most expensive country globally, making it a serious consideration for those planning a luxury getaway—or those who want to know what they’re getting into before they book!
Whether you’re eyeing a bargain trip to Eastern Europe or willing to splash out on a Swiss adventure, these figures offer a handy guide for planning your 2025 travels.
