Quirónsalud Málaga has launched a free colorectal cancer prevention campaign to help detect early signs of the disease and reduce mortality rates. The initiative provides free faecal occult blood tests (FOBT) to individuals over 50 years old, aiming to identify potential colorectal lesions before they become malignant.
Why Colorectal Cancer Prevention Matters
Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Early detection significantly increases survival rates, making preventive measures like FOBTs crucial. Quirónsalud Málaga’s campaign targets individuals over 50 who do not exhibit digestive symptoms such as visible blood in stool, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits.
What is the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)?
FOBT is a non-invasive screening method designed to detect microscopic traces of blood in stool, which may indicate colorectal lesions. This simple test helps identify larger polyps that can later be removed via colonoscopy, preventing cancer development.
Who Should Take the Test?
- Individuals over 50 without digestive symptoms.
- Those with a family history of colorectal cancer.
- People looking for early detection methods to prevent cancer progression.
How the Free Colorectal Cancer Screening Works
To participate in the campaign, eligible individuals will receive a free FOBT kit to collect a stool sample. The sample is then analyzed by specialists at Quirónsalud Málaga. If the test result is positive, indicating the presence of occult blood, patients will be offered a free specialist consultation and a colonoscopy within 10 days at no cost.
Understanding the Test Results
- Negative result: No blood detected. Regular testing is recommended every two years.
- Positive result: Blood detected in the sample. This does not necessarily mean cancer but requires further examination.
