From Meat to Comedy
The Club Quesada is excited to welcome UK comedian Adrian Doughty for a night of laughter and surprises on Thursday, May 22.
For more information or to book, visit theclubquesada.es, call (+34) 966717028, or drop by The Club at Calle Toledo, 24, Ciudad Quesada.
Adrian Doughty’s career is as colourful as his comedy. Starting on East Street Market in London, he sold everything from tea bags to steaks alongside the famous Pearly King. His meat-counter banter became so popular that customers visited just to hear him joke. A comment from a laughing customer: “You’re wasted here, mate”, inspired him to dream bigger.
He went on to open a balloon shop on Eastbourne Pier, using a clever American machine called the Easy-Wrap, which could put a soft toy inside a balloon. The shop was a big hit, and with the money he made, Adrian bought several properties. He planned to become a landlord but instead ended up running a shelter for homeless people, offering rooms for free to those struggling with drug and alcohol problems.
Unfortunately, the shelter faced many challenges. Local neighbours campaigned against it, claiming it made the area less desirable. At the same time, many tenants had their benefits cut unfairly, and Adrian found it hard to get the professional help they needed.
When the shelter was at risk of closing, Adrian came up with an unexpected way to keep it going. He became a male stripper. Before long, he had built a full career as an entertainer, mixing comedy, drag, balloon dancing, acting, singing and pantomime.
