The Jacksonville Jaguars were not awarded a player off waivers on Wednesday, Aug. 27. Teams had until noon to make claims for players placed on waivers Tuesday, during the league’s 53-man roster deadline.
Jacksonville is fifth in waiver wire priority with the order based on last season’s results, the same as the NFL Draft. The waiver order will change after the first three weeks of the regular season, when it will then be based on win-loss record and other tiebreakers.
Jacksonville’s lack of acquisitions on the waiver wire does not mean the team did not submit a claim (it doesn’t mean they did, either). Four teams were ahead of Jacksonville, including the Tennessee Titans (first), Cleveland Browns (second), New York Giants (third) and the New England Patriots (fourth).
Tennessee claimed and was awarded four players, while the Browns, Giants and Patriots were each awarded two players, respectively.
On Tuesday, the Jaguars finalized the team’s initial 53-man roster, paving the way for the start of the regular season.
The team made quick work in changing the roster, however, trading for receiver Tim Patrick, while waiving WR Austin Trammell. Jacksonville sent a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Detroit Lions to facilitate the trade.
Three former Jaguars claimed off waivers, includes Chad Muma
The Jaguars waived 27 players on Tuesday, and three of them have found other homes, claimed off waivers on Wednesday.
That list includes linebacker Chad Muma, who the team drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Muma was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts.
Jacksonville’s fourth-round pick from a season ago, defensive lineman Jordan Jefferson, was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco 49ers, while 2023 fourth-round DL Tyler Lacy was claimed by and awarded to the Detroit Lions.
What is a waiver claim?
A waiver claim is the mechanism that teams are permitted to use to acquire recently waived players. Teams typically have 24 hours to make a claim. The league uses a priority-order system to award players to teams. For instance, Jacksonville is fifth in the waiver order, meaning only four teams ahead of them have priority.
Players with four or more accrued seasons are not subject to the waiver wire. An example includes former Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas, who was released on Tuesday at the deadline, but signed by the Lions the following day. Essentially, released players become free agents, whereas waived players get put into a pseudo draft pool.
It should be noted that waiver claims do not operate like fantasy football. A team that is fifth on the priority list will be awarded all players claimed so long as the four teams in front of them do not claim the same player.
