Google is soon bringing Gemini to Android Auto, giving drivers in supported vehicles access to smarter, voice-based AI assistance on the road.
The tech giant says the update will allow users to control apps, plan journeys, summarise messages, and even practise work presentations without touching a screen – just by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.”
Gemini AI and Android Auto
According to Google, the new AI rollout will enhance the current Android Auto experience by enabling more natural conversations and deeper integration with apps like Gmail and Google Maps.
‘Gemini Live is a conversational experience with Gemini that is a perfect fit in the car. Just say ‘Hey Google, let’s talk’ to brainstorm, explore and learn something new with Gemini,’ says a Google blogpost.
The company says drivers will be able to interact with Gemini to get directions, check emails, or follow up on a podcast, all hands-free. One example given is using Gemini to get a quick synopsis of a book on your way to a book club meetup – a bit of a cheat if you ask me!
What can Google Gemini do in the car?
Gemini will appear in two main ways within Android Auto, according to Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars, as reported by TechCrunch. These include:
- Conversational help: More intuitive voice commands, where users speak naturally rather than using specific prompts.
- Integrated support: Connecting to apps like Gmail to retrieve old emails or summarise new ones.
‘Gemini will upgrade that experience by understanding what you want while you’re driving, through natural conversations,’ Google confirms.
The company says the AI can also find tailored pit stops, such as locating a charging station near a park so you can take a walk while your car powers up – now that is handy.
Gemini is expanding across Android devices
Gemini is not just coming to Android Auto. Google has confirmed its generative AI will be available across Wear OS smartwatches, Google TV, and the upcoming Android XR headsets built in collaboration with Samsung.
- On watches, it can set reminders or pull up emails during a workout.
- On TV, it can recommend family-friendly content or explain solar system facts to kids.
- In XR, it will help plan holidays by creating immersive itineraries with maps and videos.
When will Gemini launch in cars?
The Gemini AI experience will launch ‘in the coming months’ for all cars that support Android Auto, followed by vehicles with Google built-in systems. According to Google, more than 50 car models currently include built-in Google features, and over 250 million cars globally support Android Auto.
This latest move forms part of Google‘s broader goal to create a truly unified AI assistant across its entire Android ecosystem.
