The price of the butane 12.5 kilogramme butane cylinder in Spain – known as the ‘bombona’ – will be reviewed on May 20th, and while the price could drop, most experts expect it to rise.
The measure, which directly affects the wallets of millions of families across the country, is taken every two months, which is government policy as stated in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). The price was last revised on March 18th, when the price increased 6.19 per cent to 17.67 euros from January.
State Order TED/211/2025 states that the price variation on May 20th will be 5 per cent, either up or down, which means the price will not be more than 18.55 euros nor less than 16.78 euros. The price increase recorded in the latest revision was mainly due to the rise in raw material prices (up 4.89%) and higher marketing costs (up 14.27%). In addition, a surcharge of 20 cents per container was added, according to sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
How do they calculate the butane bombona’s price
The price is calculated based on the maximum before taxes, published every two months in the BOE. The price depends on the international price of butane and propane, transportation costs, and currency exchange rate oscillations.
The base price of the bombona includes any accumulated imbalances from previous revisions, before levies are added. The special hydrocarbon tax (1.5 cents per kilogram, or €15 per ton) and VAT, which is currently 21 per cent.
The maximum pre-tax for A 12.5 kg cylinder is multiplied by the weight, the excise tax is added, and VAT is applied, thus obtaining the final price customers are charged.
The price of the butane cylinder has increased by 15 per cent over the last six months, according to the Consumer and User Organisation (OCU). In their report, OCU predicts the price of butane will continue to rise.
The 11 kg propane cylinder currently costs 16.67 euros, while the 35 kg cylinder costs 79.90 euros.
