Palmer says Chelsea deserved more in Bayern defeat

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer reflected on his side’s 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in their Champions League opener tonight, claiming they deserved more.
The Blues began the match brightly but fell behind as Bayern capitalised on key errors. Palmer pulled one back for Chelsea, scoring the only goal for his team on the night.
Missed chances and costly errors
Bayern went ahead through Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal before Harry Kane doubled the lead from the penalty spot.
Cole Palmer pulled one back in the 29th minute, but Kane soon restored Bayern’s two-goal cushion. Palmer later thought he had scored again, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Palmer told TNT Sports: “We deserved more, to be honest,” he said. “We started well and had early chances to score, but when you make mistakes at the highest level, it’s hard to come back.”
The 23-year-old admitted that Bayern’s ruthlessness was the difference but also pointed to his team’s lapses in key moments.
He emphasised that Chelsea demonstrated they could compete with one of the top teams in the tournament. He felt the defeat highlighted areas that must improve if the team are to progress.
Palmer’s sharpness and direct play caused Bayern problems. His goal also provided some encouragement that Chelsea can pose a threat to Europe’s best teams.
Chelsea will aim to bounce back quickly, starting with the Premier League game at Manchester United on Saturday.
