PERRY TWP. — Mikey Haley has been an inspiration for the Perry Panthers in their storybook run to the state finals.
Just over two weeks after having his appendix removed, the junior point guard is back on the basketball court with his teammates.
Haley practiced with the Panthers on Tuesday and will be available to play in Friday’s OHSAA Division II boys basketball state championship game against Westerville North in Dayton.
“It feels great playing with them guys after what they did for me,” said Haley, referring to Perry’s run to the title game.
The first step is to build up Haley’s stamina so he can compete and play against Westerville North. Head coach Matt Voll will know more about how much Haley can play as the week progresses.
“He’s a skilled player,” Voll said. “The kid has never missed one workout since April 1. He’s a tough kid who wants to do everything he can to help his team every which way.
“It was good to see his smile on the court. It was good to see him moving and handling the ball. I think he’s going to get stronger each day.”
Haley scored 11 points in Perry’s district semifinal win at Amherst Steele on Feb. 25. While getting set to depart for the district final against Solon four days later, something went drastically wrong.
“I couldn’t walk,” Haley said.
Haley was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with appendicitis. He had his appendix removed the next morning.
Haley spent three days in the hospital and rejoined his team in time for its regional run in Akron. He saw Luke Wolf’s last-second prayer to beat Warren Harding in the semifinals and the win over Shaker Heights that sent the Panthers to their first final four in 34 years.
Sunday’s come-from-behind state semifinal win over North Royalton at the Field House has given Haley a chance to play in the biggest game in program history.
“It was great for me to be able to watch them play,” Haley said. “It just felt amazing. It’s unbelievable, but these guys have pulled through.”
