The Caribbean island of Nevis is preparing for a major tourism boost with an airport expansion plan.
The project, set to begin later in 2025 and finish within two years, will allow direct flights from the UK, US, and Europe for the first time, removing the current need to connect via neighbouring islands including St Kitts and Puerto Rico.
Princess Diana’s favourite holiday destination
Nevis has long held a special place in the hearts of British travellers, thanks in part to its Royal connection. In 1993, Princess Diana famously holidayed on the island with Princes William and Harry. Their stay at the Montpelier Plantation Estate helped brand Nevis as an elite yet peaceful Caribbean retreat.
Tim Hoffman, whose family once owned the Montpelier estate, told The Telegraph that the trip was organised last minute and while the hotel wasn’t booked out, its restaurant was closed to the public for privacy. “Nevis was – and still is – off the beaten path,” he said, “so she could have come here without being inundated with paparazzi.”
Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration, Mark Brantley, proudly highlighted the Royal connection in a recent statement:
“We are proud of our rich history and the fact we were the destination of choice for Princess Diana… We look forward to welcoming more visitors and fans of the British Royal Family from the UK and further afield.” (Cited by Winn FM)
Vance W. Amory International Airport
The Vance W. Amory International Airport will soon undergo a significant upgrade to meet international aviation standards. Planned improvements include a longer runway to accommodate larger aircraft, a modernised terminal, an upgraded air traffic control tower, and expanded aircraft parking.
These developments follow guidelines from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airports Council International (ACI), and IATA.
Premier Brantley stressed the project’s economic importance:
“Enhancing our airport infrastructure is central to our goal to become a regional Caribbean leader. This project is key to strengthening our economy, attracting foreign investment, and building resilience.”
Nevis Island tourism
Currently, most visitors fly to St Kitts and take a ferry to Nevis. But with the expanded airport, Nevis is expected to attract more direct international flights, private jets, commercial carriers, and cruise travellers opting to fly in before or after voyages.
Nevis also boasts historic significance beyond royalty – it’s the birthplace of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. With new access routes, these cultural gems could finally reach a broader global audience.
Tourism in Nevis may soon evolve from an exclusive retreat to a well-connected Caribbean destination just a direct flight away.
