The first week of March brought much-needed rainfall to the Region of Murcia, helping to ease the long-standing drought. More than 30 cubic hectometres (hm³) of water flowed into the Segura River’s reservoirs, pushing total reserves above 250 hm³. This increase has given farmers hope that water restrictions could soon be lifted or reduced.
Farmers await water restriction updates
With more water now available, officials are reviewing irrigation limits. Many expect restrictions to be eased or even removed in the coming weeks. The forecast for spring also predicts higher-than-average rainfall, which could further improve water availability.
Forests and aquifers benefit from rainfall
The recent rainfall has not only helped farmers but also supported the environment. Forests and aquifers across Murcia are seeing positive effects, particularly in areas like Mula and Bullas, which have already received three times more rain than last year. This extra moisture could help slow the decline of pine trees and other vegetation affected by the drought.
Tagus River transfers secured until 2026
Water levels in the Tagus River are high enough to allow water transfers without cuts until at least 2026. This is good news for areas that rely on these transfers for agriculture and daily water use.
Severe Flooding Causes Damage and Loss of Life
While the rain has helped ease drought conditions, it also brought serious challenges. Heavy downpours led to severe flooding in several areas, causing widespread damage to homes, roads, and farmland. Tragically, one man lost his life due to the extreme weather. Emergency services responded to numerous incidents, rescuing stranded residents and dealing with the aftermath of the storms.
Despite the destruction, the rainfall has replenished water reserves and improved conditions for farmers and the environment. With a wetter-than-usual spring expected, Murcia may see continued drought relief, though officials remain cautious about the risk of further storms.
