The Brooklyn Nets are a few days away from training camp beginning and the team gets to see where everything stands heading into their preseason slate of games. Brooklyn has been trying to make sure that they are addressing their salary cap commitments while refining the roster, but it looks like one player will not be participating in camp as was previously reported.
The Nets will not have forward Ricky Council IV when training camp begins on Wednesday, according to a report from NetsDaily on X on Sunday. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Aug. 1 that Brooklyn signed Council to a one-year contract after he was released by the Philadelphia 76ers following the conclusion of the 2024-25 NBA season in which the 76ers finished with a 24-58 record.
The 2024-25 season was the best campaign that Council had in the NBA since leaving Wichita State to pursue his professional basketball career. Council played in 73 games last season for the 76ers and he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 38.2% from the field and 25.8% from three-point land in 17.1 minutes per contest.
As of this writing, the Nets will be heading into camp with 20 players under contract, not including forwards Grant Nelson and Fanbo Zeng. Recently, Brooklyn has been trying to make sure that they meet the salary floor by signing and waiving players to ensure that they are adding salary to the cap without adding roster spots, as fans have seen with players like center David Muoka, guard/forward Dre Davis, and guard Yuri Collins.
Spotrac’s Keith Smith noted on X that the Nets are currently $2 million over the salary floor, but they still have to waive at least two players prior to the regular season beginning. Council not coming to Brooklyn’s camp makes it easier for the Nets to evaluate the players that will be there with the possibility that other players could compete for less spots by the end of camp.
