Meteorologists have predicted ‘blood rains’—also known as mud rains—over the weekend and possibly into Easter in Spain, Portugal, and the UK.
Experts explained that the weather phenomenon will come about as storm Olivier pushes a thick plume of Saharan dust across the three countries.
Accuweather and Meteored said the dust will combine with downpours, creating muddy, reddish rain, hence the name “blood rain,” which is becoming more common in Spain, particularly during Spring and Autumn.
The weather experts have also advised residents in affected areas to avoid intense outdoor activity, particularly those with respiratory issues. They also recommend bringing pets, vehicles, and patio furniture under cover if and where possible. In Andalucía, authorities have activated the Orange Alert due to ocean waves as high as seven metres in Almeria and intense winds and storms.
Spanish news agency EFE reported a Yellow Alert in place due to storm Olivier, which is affecting Asturias, Castillas, Extremadura, Galicia, and Melilla. The sky may also appear orange or tan, giving a strange appearance to those caught outside in the dirty rain in large swathes of Spain and Portugal.
Meteorologists expect heavy rains to continue throughout most of Spain until Wednesday. They said the weather is still uncertain for next Thursday and Friday, as they expect notable changes, although there could still be storms both days.
The UK’s Meteorological Office said: “The forces that drive the weather can be quite powerful and do some surprising things – including lifting things like sand or even small objects and transporting them large distances.”
