El Caminito del Rey, Malaga’s death-defying tourist hotspot, is set to unveil the country’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge – and thrill-seekers are already itching to take the plunge.
Hanging 50 metres above solid rock, the new 110-metre-long suspension bridge is being hailed as the next big attraction at the world-famous Caminito del Rey. The vertigo-inducing addition will be built near the iron railway bridge and El Chorro tunnel in Alora, further cementing the site’s reputation as one of Spain’s most thrilling walks.
Francisco Salado, President of the Diputacion de Malaga, confirmed that construction kicks off in the coming weeks, with an ambitious completion date set for November. The cost? A cool €1.25 million – all covered by revenue generated from the Caminito itself.
This high-flying structure will be held up by two colossal steel cables, each weighing a staggering 4,500 kilos. A total of 1,450 metres of specially designed braided steel cable will be used to keep things rock solid – or at least as solid as a bridge suspended in mid-air can be.
The walkway itself? A mix of sturdy wood and metal, with steel cable railings to give visitors that signature Caminito del Rey blend of terror and breathtaking beauty. The bridge will slope downwards at a 7.5% incline, making sure the adrenaline levels never dip.
Helicopters to the rescue – because cranes just won’t cut it!
With the rugged terrain making traditional construction methods impossible, helicopters will be drafted in to transport and position key components. But fear not – even with all the high-flying engineering work, the Caminito del Rey will remain open, meaning visitors can still get their fix of heart-stopping views.
Years in the making – now ready to go
The Diputacion de Malaga has been planning the project since 2024, conducting extensive technical studies, 3D mapping of the terrain, and rigorous stress testing to ensure everything holds firm. From anchoring calculations to precise cable dimensions, every detail has been scrutinised to guarantee a hair-raising but safe experience.
So, whether you’re a seasoned thrill-seeker or just looking for the ultimate selfie backdrop, brace yourself – the Caminito del Rey’s latest daredevil challenge is about to take you to dizzying new heights.
