Passengers hoping for a smooth getaway this weekend were left high and dry as a sudden strike at Hamburg Airport threw travel plans into disarray. A total of 40 flights -20 departures and 20 arrivals—between Spain and Germany were scrapped on Sunday as ground workers downed tools without warning.
The strike, called by the German union ver.di, came out of the blue, with Hamburg Airport confirming it was launched “immediately and without prior notice.” The disruption is just the beginning, with more industrial action planned for Monday, 10 March, across multiple German airports.
Malaga, Madrid, and Mallorca among affected destinations
Spanish airports caught up in the travel turmoil include Malaga, Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Alicante, La Palma, and Bilbao, according to sources at Aena, Spain’s airport authority.
But while Sunday’s strike hit flights between Hamburg and Spain, Monday’s walkout is set to paralyse multiple sections of German airports, including aircraft handling and passenger security. Hamburg Airport has warned: “No passenger departures will be possible, and significant disruptions and cancellations are expected for arrivals.”
