If in recent days the atmosphere has already been marked by intense heat in Marina Alta and nearly all of Spain, all signs indicate it will get even worse over the weekend. As happens in many other parts of the country, Aemet has issued a yellow alert for maximum temperatures in the comarca at least for Friday and Saturday. So, it’s time to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid exercising during the hottest hours of the day.
The first warning, for Friday, will begin at 1 pm and end at 9 pm, with temperatures possibly reaching 36 degrees Celsius. The second alert will be on Saturday (the official first day of summer) at the same hours, but this time the mercury will rise a little higher, up to 37ºC.
The agency stresses that these extreme temperatures will mainly be felt inland. But don’t be complacent. The heatwave will also affect coastal areas. Even in recent days, stations in Dénia have recorded over 34 degrees in the early afternoon.
Furthermore, Aemet usually underestimates its forecasts. The actual figures, often provided by Avamet and MeteoXàbia—who operate weather stations across the region—show even higher temperatures. From Sunday onwards, there are currently no alerts in place (it’s still early days). However, temperatures won’t drop significantly.
Nights like in the equator
Another worrying factor over the coming hours, because it seriously affects health, is the high minimum temperatures. In other words, it will be difficult to sleep. In fact, for several days now, almost all towns in Marina Alta have been experiencing tropical nights, with temperatures remaining above 20 degrees. But this weekend, especially inland, there could be equatorial nights, where temperatures do not fall below 25ºC.
