- Hats off to Harry Kane for rescuing Bayern from a complete meltdown. However, Kane is no longer invincible from the penalty spot. It was an incredible streak but it is time to rotate those chances, including Michael Olise and eventually Jamal Musiala.
- Regardless of the result, Wehen goalkeeper Florian Stritzel was outrageously good today. His anticipation and reflexes produced 10 saves and gave his team every opportunity to pull off the upset.
- On the Bayern side, Jonathan Tah had a particularly poor game. On Wehen’s only opportunity in the first half, he was five yards behind the play. On Wehen’s first goal, he literally stared down the cross as Fatih Kaya walked around him. On Wehen’s second goal, he didn’t anticipate a deflection and Kaya had all the time in the world to finish his 1v1 opportunity. The lack of focus from a veteran like Tah is simply inexcusable.
- Manuel Neuer is currently serving a two-game DFB-Pokal match ban for his red card in the third round loss last December to Bayer Leverkusen, the first and only red card of his 20-year career. Jonas Urbig was left for dead on both Wehen goals on abysmal defensive mistakes. If Urbig wants to unseat Neuer, he will have to pull off some game-changing saves.
- At the end of the day, Bayern will take the win and forget about this second half. It wasn’t pretty but Bayern will move on to the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
On Saturday, Bayern will head to Augsburg for the final Bundesliga match ahead of the international break.
Bayern Munich traveled to Frankfurt to take on SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal.
The home side was game and did give Bayern Munich a battle. Sure, the Bavarians were deeper, quicker, stronger, and better, but the 3.Liga side was not going to go down easy in what was an entertaining match. Bayern Munich ultimately won 3-2.
Let’s dive into it, this is what we have on tap for episode of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
- A look at the starting XI.

FT: Bayern wins!
90’+4: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 3-2. Harry Kane’s late header bails out Bayern.
78’: Substitutions. Josip Stanišić replaces Raphaël Guerreiro. Jakod Lewald replaces Fatih Kaya.
77’: Substitution. Konrad Laimer replaces Sacha Boey.
76’: Harry Kane earns another penalty kick but Florian Stritzel makes an incredible save and blocks the rebound.
71’: Substitutions. Fabian Greilinger and Ole Wohlers replace Donny Bogičević and
Sascha Mockenhaupt.
70’: Goal, Wehen. Bayern tied 2-2. Both center-backs caught napping again. Fatih Kaya’s braces evens the scoreline.
67’: Substitutions. Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry replace Aleksandar Pavlović and Lennart Karl.
64’: Goal, Wehen. Bayern up 2-1. Jonathan Tah lost track of Fatih Kaya, who finished beautifully. Jonas Urbig is visibly upset with the lack of focus from the defense.
59’: Substitutions. Milad Nejad and Moritz Flotho replace Ryan Johansson and Nikolas Agrafiotis.
53’: Yellow card. Niklas May is booked for a foul.
51’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Michael Olise cleans up some sloppy play with a cool finish.
49’: Yellow card. Aleksandar Pavlović is booked for a late challenge.
46’: No changes for either side.
- Luis Díaz registered a shot on goal at the 11-second mark. It was a simple ball but statistically there are more goals scored in the first and last two minutes of the half, compared to every other two-minute window. Why not try to grab a quick lead?
- Bayern’s attack has been content operating at half speed, controlling possession (81%) and keeping the ball moving until a window opens. Between that hilariously atrocious non-call in the 9th minute and Díaz’s shot into a heavily guarded goal line, Bayern could easily be ahead by a few more goals.
- Lennart Karl looks more composed today but Bayern could use his spark in the final third.
- Wehen played very compact defensively. A naturally offensive-minded squad, they love to explode out of that shell in the rare chance that they actually win possession. Bayern’s defense has rooted out these counterattacks thus far, but it is something to keep an eye on. This was on full display at the 38-minute mark when Wehen probably should have scored their only decent opportunity of the half.
- Vincent Kompany will need a bigger lead before he starts making substitutions. Bayern is in full control but this match is far from over.
- If Bayern fans are feeling frustrated that they’re not up 5-0 right at halftime, Manchester United is losing 2-0 at Grimsby Town, an EFL League Two (fourth division) side.
HT: Bayern up 1-0.
16’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Sacha Boey gets pulled down on the cross, Harry Kane buries the kick from the penalty spot.
9’: Referee misses an egregious handball in the box.

After winning the inaugural Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, Bayern Munich opened their Bundesliga title defense with a resounding 6-0 win over RB Leipzig. Not to be outdone by Michael Olise’s brace or Luis Díaz highlight goal, Harry Kane swooped in for a second half hat trick to claim Man of the Match.
Bayern and SV Wehen Wiesbaden have never played in a competitive or friendly match. Hailing from the third division, Wehen has played against Bayern II on a number of occasions, splitting the matches relatively evenly over the years.
According to FCBayern.com, Wehen has not been much of a giant killer in the DFB-Pokal.
The eight-time Hessian cup winners have mostly failed to progress beyond the first round of the cup in recent years. In that time they’ve largely come up against top-flight teams such as Mainz 05 (3-1 a.e.t, 2024), RB Leipzig (3-2, 2023) or Borussia Dortmund (3-0, 2021). The Wiesbaden club’s greatest success in Germany’s national cup competition came in the 2008/209 season, when they were narrowly knocked out 2-1 by Hamburger SV in the quarter-finals.
Here is the predicted lineup, courtesy of BFW:
Vincent Kompany will have the luxury of resting any players who are dealing with minor injuries, namely Harry Kane and Konrad Laimer. Michael Olise, Dayot Upamecano, and Manuel Neuer should also sit this one out. Lennart Karl will play at least half this game but not until the result is in hand. This would have been a full 90-minute game for Tim Bischof if he hadn’t removed his appendix last week.
Ideally, this game is over at halftime with another 3-0 lead. Wisdom Mike, Lennart Karl, and a couple Bayern II players can get some first team minutes while not compromising them ahead of their match on Friday.
From an injury standpoint, Bayern will still be without the services of Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Tom Bischof and Hiroki Itō.
Wehen primarily operates out of a 4-4-2 formation. Justin Janitzek and Ryan Johansson both played substantial minutes for Bayern’s academy.
Bayern Munich is traveling to…“somewhere near Frankfurt” per head coach Vincent Kompany to take on SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB-Pokal.
The Bavarians are riding high after taking down RB Leipzig 6-0 in the Bundesliga and will face the current 6th place team in 3. Liga. SV Wehen Wiesbaden is 1-1-1, featured a couple of ex-Bayern Munich academy products, and is not exactly a push over.
Let’s dive into it! This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show:
- What to watch for with SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
- A look at Bayern Munich’s injury situation.
- A guess at Bayern Munich’s starting XI.
- A prediction on the match.
