In Malaga, a bizarre technique employed by pickpockets has been dubbed the ‘Ronaldinho’ method, named after the famous Brazilian footballer known for his outstanding technique and impressive dribbling skills.
The National Police recently arrested a 28-year-old suspected thief who used this method in Malaga. He has a history of committing crimes against property. A mobile phone, reported as stolen, was recovered, as well as personal documents belonging to another victim. The police have charged the suspect with four counts of theft and one count of robbery with intimidation.
How does the ‘Ronaldinho’ technique work
The ‘Ronaldinho’ method involves thieves mimicking a football dribble, but without using an actual ball. According to the authorities, the thieves often start the conversation with their victims by talking about football. Then, at some point, they recreate what would be like a dribble, as if the victim were a defender on a football team and the thief, on the other hand, were the striker.
The objective of the pickpockets is to create brief physical contact with the victim. In that split second, they snatch valuable items, often leaving the target unaware of the theft.
Foreign tourists are the main victims
This method of stealing has caused concern among tourists in the historic center of Malaga. The main victims are foreign tourists, some of them just passing through the city as part of cruises. Authorities in Malaga recently received multiple reports of thefts, with the stolen items ranging from wallets to mobile phones and other valuables.
Malaga authorities warn tourists in the city to stay alert and be cautious, especially in crowded areas of the city. According to the authorities, the thieves tend to target unsuspecting travelers.
