Technical Assessment: Bullish in the Intermediate-Term
Summary
The focus of the stock market this week will move to third-quarter EPS reports, as earnings season swings into high gear. Some of the big reports will come from KO, LMT, GE, RTX, MMM, DHR, NFLX, ISRG, COF, VRT, GEV, TMO, TSLA, IBM, LRCX, SAP, BX, PG, and GD. At the very least, we are likely to see some individual stock volatility. The S&P 500 popped 1.7% last week, the Nasdaq added 2.1%, and the Nasdaq 100 ripped higher by 2.5%. Smaller stocks participated once again, with the S&P 400 tacking on 2% and the S&P 600 up 3%. There were some diverse weekly candlesticks last week, with the S&P 500 tracing out a neutral spinning top and the Nasdaq and Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) forming bullish hammers. The mid- and small-cap indices traced out bullish inverted hammers. Sector strength was very broad, with Real Estate up 3.3%, Discretionary 2.5%, Information Technology 2.4%, Staples and Communication Services 2%, Utilities 1.5%, Materials 1.2%, and Energy and Healthcare 0.8%.
